AI Text Cleaner: Remove ChatGPT & Markdown Formatting, Keep the Words
Last updated: October 30, 2026
AI chatbots write in Markdown — a formatting code full of **, ##, *, and backticks. It looks fine inside the chat window, but the moment you paste an answer into Word, Google Docs, LinkedIn, or an email, the symbols come with it: headings arrive as ##, emphasis arrives as **stars**, and code arrives wrapped in fences. Deleting them by hand is slow, and it is easy to miss some.
The Remove AI / Markdown formatting option in our free Text Cleaner does that cleanup in one click. It strips the symbols and keeps the words — headings become plain heading lines, links keep their link text, and bullets become plain lines you can paste anywhere.
Before and after — clean your text right here
Paste an AI answer into the first box — the Markdown is removed as you type, and the clean version appears below it. A short example is already filled in so you can see the before and after straight away. Everything runs in your browser; your text is never uploaded.
What gets removed — and what stays
- Heading markers: ## and ### disappear; the heading text stays as a plain line.
- Bold, italic, strikethrough: **, *, __, _, and ~~ markers are removed; the words stay.
- Code: backticks and ``` code fences are removed; the code itself stays.
- Links and images: [text](url) becomes just the text — no brackets, no URL clutter.
- Blockquotes and bullets: leading > markers and -, *, + bullets become plain lines.
- Horizontal rules: --- becomes a normal paragraph break.
- Tables: the | pipes become commas, and the empty separator row is dropped, so the values read as plain lines.
- Decorative extras: emoji used as bullets at the start of a line, and any stray asterisks left behind, are removed.
- What stays: every word, your paragraphs, and your numbered lists — numbers are usually content, so 1. 2. 3. are kept on purpose.
How to clean AI text
- Copy the answer from ChatGPT (or any AI tool) exactly as it is.
- Paste it into the cleaner at the top of this page — the cleaned text appears as you type.
- Check the result, press Copy cleaned text, and paste it into your document.
- For extra polish (extra spaces, blank lines, line breaks), use the full Text Cleaner with Remove AI / Markdown formatting ticked.
Like everything on Fact Techz, the cleaning happens entirely in your browser — your text is never uploaded or stored.
Good to know
- It is tuned for prose. If your text contains code or maths, give it a quick read afterwards — an asterisk inside a formula is treated as formatting, and underscores inside words (like snake_case names) are deliberately never touched.
- It works on more than ChatGPT. Any Markdown source — other AI assistants, GitHub readmes, notes apps — cleans up the same way.
- Formatting like bold is removed, not converted. The result is plain text. If you need the bold to survive into Word, paste into the chatbot's own export instead — plain text is the right tool when the symbols themselves are the problem.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove markdown from ChatGPT text?
Paste the answer into the Text Cleaner, tick “Remove AI / Markdown formatting”, and press Clean text. The symbols are stripped in your browser and you can copy the plain result.
Does the AI text cleaner change my words?
No. It removes formatting symbols only — asterisks, heading hashes, backticks, link brackets, bullets. Your words, sentences, and paragraphs stay as they are, and numbered lists keep their numbers.
What exactly does it remove?
Heading markers (#), bold and italic markers (** and *), strikethrough (~~), inline code backticks and code fences, link and image syntax (the link text stays), blockquote markers (>), bullet markers, horizontal rules, table pipes, leading decorative emoji, and stray asterisks.
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. The cleaning runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded, stored, or tracked.
Does it remove emoji?
Only decorative emoji at the very start of a line, which AI answers use like bullets. Emoji inside your sentences are left untouched.
