How characters are counted

Characters are counted the way you see them: one visible character equals one. An emoji such as πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ or πŸ‡΅πŸ‡° counts as a single character, even though it is stored as several code units behind the scenes. "With spaces" includes every space, tab and line break; "without spaces" strips all whitespace first, so only visible characters remain.

Common character limits

  • X (Twitter) post: 280 characters
  • SMS message: 160 characters per segment
  • Meta description: around 155–160 characters
  • Instagram bio: 150 characters

Enter any of these as your limit above and the counter shows exactly how many characters you have left β€” turning red if you go over.
