Readability Checker

Paste your writing and get an estimated readability score, grade level, and plain-English difficulty rating β€” explained honestly.

Private by design: analysis happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never uploaded or stored anywhere.

What the score means

The checker uses two standard formulas:

  • Flesch Reading Ease β€” a 0–100 score. Higher means easier to read. Most adult web content aims for 60–70.
  • Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level β€” the US school grade needed to understand the text. Plain English is roughly grade 7–9.

An honest note about accuracy

These formulas count sentence length and syllables β€” they do not judge whether your writing is clear, correct, or good. Short text (under 30 words) produces unreliable scores, which is why the tool warns you. Technical terms with many syllables can make knowledgeable writing look "difficult." Treat every score as a rough hint, never a verdict on your writing. See our Disclaimer.

English only: the syllable-counting algorithm is tuned for English words. Scores for text in other languages are unreliable β€” if your text doesn't look like English, the tool will show a language warning with the score.

How to improve a low score

  • Break long sentences into shorter ones.
  • Prefer common words over rare ones where meaning allows.
  • Use the Text Cleaner first if your text has messy formatting.
